Listen to Dr. Mena Mirhom, a board-certified psychiatrist and a member of the Healthcorps Board of Advisors, explains how to prioritize your mental health.

Today Dr. Mirhom explains how to prioritize your mental health using the 3Ps: Passion, Purpose, and Partners.

Dr. Mirhom is passionate about reducing the stigma behind mental health and encouraging others to make mental health a priority in life and know that there is no shame in seeking help. If we do not have have good mental health, then we do not have good overall health. Acknowledging how we can improve our mental health will only improve our overall well being. Here are some tips that Dr. Mirhom shares with us and the players he works with in the NBA. Remember the three P’s: Passion, Purpose, and Partner.

Passion: when you are going through a difficult time, remember what are the things you love to do? What are things that give your life flavor and meaning? When he asks his players, they sometimes respond that their passion is the game, playing basketball. For other players, this is not always necessarily the case and it could be other things such as writing or playing cards. Take a moment now to reflect on the different activities or hobbies that give you passion. What are they?

Purpose: Behind every work that you are doing, there is meaning and purpose behind it. Even if it seems boring or not as rewarding as you expected, take a moment to look for the meaning behind each interaction and task. Keep in mind that it all builds up to something greater. One example he gives with his players is the purpose behind drills. Although they might seem repetitive and exhausting, each one builds up their skills and endurance, leading them to become better players.
